Painting & Photography
HAYDEN, Kenneth
The natural world has been an element in my art since my earliest days as a photographer some 25 years ago and continues now in my paintings. Being more interested in conveying an idea or feeling than creating a literal representation I use my current medium as a means of reflection and transference of emotion. Action, lack of action, meditation, the passage of time - the human condition - are my subject. My work contextualizes the existential exploration of found subjects, the juxtapositions of time and place, and fragmented memories of my childhood spent growing up in the Kentucky countryside.
Ultimately, I have no real interest in or attachment to birds. While appreciating their unpredictable behavior and the ancient mysticism and symbolism attached to them, I don’t actually try to project that aspect in my work. And I find it interesting that when people speak to me about these paintings they react as though they are living, breathing creatures.
